Port Macquarie Courthouse Yarning Circle and Various Works
As part of a sustainability and inclusion project, DICE Contracting consulted with the local Aboriginal community and constructed a new yarning circle with surrounding landscaping at Port Macquarie Courthouse for BGIS.
Scope of works
- Consultation with the local Aboriginal community
- Construction of a new yarning circle
- Surrounding landscaping
- Various associated courthouse works
The constraint
A culturally significant structure on the grounds of an operating courthouse. Getting it right took community consultation, not just a set of drawings.
Outcome
A yarning circle provides a culturally safe space for conversation and decision-making. Its inclusion at a courthouse supports culturally appropriate justice practice.
Indigenous participation
The design was developed in consultation with the local Aboriginal community rather than imposed on it.
